Students' impressions

The first trans-national meeting - summary

The first trans-national meeting of the Erasmus + ‘Maths is around us’ project took place at ‘Grigore Antipa’ College of Science on December 3-6, 2019. The project was carried out in collaboration with IES Izpisua Belmonte Hellin from Spain and the 3rd High School of Rethymno from Greece.

All activities scheduled for the meeting have been successfully conducted and some of them had the purpose of preparing future trans-national mobilities. Statistics research was one of the strong points of the meeting. Students divided into five groups (2 Romanian students, 1 Spanish student, 1 Greek student) worked hard and made a survey including statistics on the way students, irrespective of their nationality, view Mathematics. The work of every team has then been turned into an illustrative info chart.

One of the most exciting outdoor activities of the meeting was represented by the so-called ‘treasure hunt’. The activity focused on logic,  intuition, orientation and creativity. It took place in Brasov, based on itinerary and clues prepared by Romanian partners. ‘The treasures’ were represented by architectonic elements of tourist attractions in Brasov. The selection of these details has been done starting from details representing geometric shapes. For starters, participants were informed about the ‘rules of the game’. They were divided into three teams, each team received a map of Brasov with 6   landmarks. On another sheet of paper there were details, as many as the number of landmarks on the map. Associating each detail with the right landmark was their task. The proof of solving the task was a selfie the team had to take with each detail.

The activity which took place at Transilvania University of Brasov was extremely appealing to students. PhD professor, vice-rector M.D.Liliana Rogozea presented some interesting aspects related to the university she represented.

Visits to the first Romanian school and Bran castle were relevant activities for the project, necessary for the following trans-national meetings (for example the cryptography project), taking into account the fact that these landmarks are representative for the European patrimony.

In conclusion, we can say the meeting was an unforgettable experience for all partners, students, parents and teachers, an experience that assumed a certain alchemy for which it seems the ingredients have been very well chosen.

the 1st mobility in brasov in the 3rd high school of Rethymno web page

1st activity(statistics)

25 students(5 groups of 5 students) in Greece which didnt participate in the first mobility worked in conventional way the 1st activity related to statistics.  They made tables , calculations, bars, conclusions, statistical interpretation. Now they are  eager to compare the conventional way of proccessing data  with the ICT prossessing  used in Brasov by their peers.

Last day in Brasov

Firstly, students are requested to show their impressions in a collaborative board.
We also have read Transilvania Express and the news about us, you can see the in the following link Our Erasmus+ in Brasov media

Then we go on a trip, today we have visited some important places in Brasov county such as Bran Castle and Rasnov citadel.  In both places we have learnt a lot about the history of Romania and its connections with the surrounded countries.
Now, we have to leave. We are happy with the work we've done and we've also planned next steps in twinspace to organize next mobility in Rethymo.

Third day in Brasov

We met at school and we saw a presentation with the best selfies of the treasure hunting. Later we assess the mathematical activities we have done together. To evaluate them  each participant have received 5 smilies stickers and then put them on a board.
You can see the final result in the picture above
The best activity for students was the treasure hunting, and the worst was the statistical study (maybe it was too demanding for them, they worked hard many hours).
Once the assessment session was finished, we have gone to the University of Brasov, there we've got a meeting with the vicerector, she showed us how this University is and it internationalization process,  we finished the visit at the library. Each participant has received a certificate as a member of our Erasmus+ project .

Finally we've gone to the first Romanian School where we've taught about it and many cultural issues.
It's been a very cold day but it's been intense and quite interesting.

Tomorrow morning we go on a trip to Bran Castle. Both places, Bran Castle and the first Romanian school will be relevant in our project when we develop the cryptographic part about cultural European Heritage

Our second day in Brasov

Today is a very cold day. Temperature is below zero, but we go on with our work.
At the beginning of the morning one student from Romania has shown us their 3D printer (yesterday we received a beautiful present made with it and many of us were interested in seeing how it works).
Then we had a meeting to be taught about the treasure hunt, after the meeting students were divided into three groups and then start the activity.  Teachers also have joined to them.
Mainly the activity consist of a map created with mathcitymap with 6 relevant places in the city, we also have a very beautiful page with 6 pictures drawn by Mirona, an Arts teacher from Brasov. Participants have be located, to find the treasures and to send a selfie when they find it.
It was a simple but very interesting experience.
Now you can see the map and the pictures below.

Meeting in Brasov

Today, 3rd of December, is the first day of our meeting in Brasov. 5 students from Spain and 5 from Greece are hosted by Romanian students. Yesterday they received us with a traditional welcome and then they went to their hostess homes. Today we had a breaking the ice activity and the local drama club performed a summary of their plays. Later they have played two collaborative games. After the break, students and teachers have gone to the computer lab to do the research with the survey whose results are on twinspace. Working with the spreadsheet they are making graphs (mainly pie charts and bar charts) to show the results. Finally we will show the results in a infographic made in Canvas.

preparation of the Greek mathcity walk

Walking around preparing Rethymno's Math city map

On Thursday 7th of November students and teachers had a walk  in the city of rethymno  looking  around , making  measurments  preparing the math walk. We had already discussed in the class our proposals. Walking around the city students had new ideas. It is hard to decide which monument and what problem to choose for the monuments,  for creating our math route. In our next  meetings and next walks we will be ready. One is for sure. We all enjoyed our walk and we are looking forward our peers from the other countries to walk alltoghether Rethymno's math route

Working with statistics in Hellín

Students of IES Izpisúa Belmonte (Hellín) are working in the survey

  • They translated they survey into Spanish so that their  classmates can answer easily the questions.
  • Since teachers have decided that the sample is 20% of students, we decided to do a stratified random sample (for class groups)
  • We made a random selection (students learnt how to use the # key in their scientific calculators). For this selection they used the following data:
  • GROUP
    NUMBER STUDENTS
    NUMBER STUDENTS IN SAMPLE
    4º A
    17
    3
    4ºB
    26
    5
    1ºBACH A
    33
    7
    1º BACH B
    29
    6
    2º BACH A
    31
    6
    2ºBACH B
    31

  • Once we have the sample, students answer the survey
  • Finally we upload to a shared spreadsheet our results so that we can make a report and an inphografic in brasov

The summary of our project

Mathematics helps us to understand the world around us. Through this project students will have the
opportunity to realize, in a pleasant way, how mathematics can be applied in real life and how much
useful they are. In a transversal way, mathematical terms and concepts will be mixed with History, Arts,
Cryptography and Computing Science. Students are asked to explore, analyse, compose mathematical
concepts, drawing their conclusions on issues of greatest cultural value, so that their knowledge about local,
national and European cultural heritage will be reinforced.
